The first step is to determine the size that your feather will be. This depends on its intended use; however, as a rule of thumb you should choose thread with approximately 70-75 wraps per square inch to get the optimal results.

Select Your Feathers

Feathers earings are an excellent material to work with for projects with a decorative theme due to their numerous designs and colors. Feathers can be used in wall hangings, sculptures, wreaths, dream catchers and ornaments; selecting the ideal feathers for your project is vital as the appearance and feel rely heavily on them. Take into consideration aspects like the quality of color, size and soft or rigid choices when choosing feathers to use in your project.

Based on the theme you are using, natural or neutral colored feathers may be best. Although dyed feathers provide plenty of visual interest but their bright colors can disappear faster than natural feathers. Therefore, dyed may not be the optimal option for your project.

A second consideration is the space available; larger feathers may create more drama and formality while smaller ones can appear more informal. When selecting the feathers you will use in projects take note of their length and shape. Certain feathers feature flat surfaces, while others have larger curvilinear and ruffled forms which add texture. If you don't take care of the feathers properly can cause knots or static-charged feathers being used, be sure to inspect them thoroughly before you use it.

If you are adding more feathers to your headpin, make sure that an earring wire of high-quality (the hardware that connects to the ear) is in place; I would recommend lever backs with their adjustable loops on the bottom, which allows it to let you open and close the ear easily.

After you have your feathers as you would like, place them into a crimp tube and close it with pliers to ensure an ensconced hold. This allows you to perform other tasks with them like putting beads on them to make earrings with beads or wire the headpin directly onto a barrette to make a headpiece for use; creating bird's nest necklaces or a cluster of flowers as pendants is another option. You could also affix feathers directly onto wire to make bracelets! Be creative! Experiment with different arrangements as you create various effects

For a simple way to keep them looking good, feathers can be kept looking amazing by wrapping twine tightly around them. The twine is usually an element of kits, or is available separately. its waxy coating allows it to be wrapped tightly around objects.

Make a wire piece long enough to wrap it twice around the feather and reduce it to about half of its original length. by using needle nose pliers to grasp both ends. One runs parallel with its spine while the other is perpendicular to it and forms loops (Photos 3 & 4). Once you've completed this, you can hang it from either an earwire or jump ring (great for adding to a necklace) by putting its hook into the hole that was created at the top of the wrapping (Photo 5).

Crimp These

This helps to secure your feathers into an earring using just one crimp beads per feather that you plan to add. After you have parted your hair in accordance to your preference (not too much though) decide where you would like to attach your feather extension.
